A hack project is supposed to get the thing you are trying to accomplish as cheaply or as fast as possible without really having to learn the craft. A quick solution. Maybe not the best solutuon, but it'll do. You can buy a kit and assemble your project and call it your DIY ___. In most cases it looks like garbage, it looks like you did it yourself. Once you make the decision that this one specific thing is the thing you want to improve on, get better at and own the skill. That's when you become a craftsman. We all start at zero, therefore your work will show your skill set, but with every reiteration you get better at it.

A DIYer/ a hack just wants to get it done, A craftsman wants to get it done as good as he can. More care, attention and experience is involved in the process.
